Home Country: Brazil

Brazil, officially the Federative Republic of Brazil (Portuguese: Brasil or República Federativa do Brasil), is the largest and most populous country in Latin America, and the fifth largest in the world in both area and population. Its territory covers 8,514,877 km² between central South America and the Atlantic Ocean, and it is the eastern-most country of the Americas.

Brazil borders Venezuela, Suriname, Guyana and the department of French Guiana to the north, Uruguay to the south, Argentina and Paraguay to the southwest, Bolivia and Peru to the west, and Colombia to the northwest. The only South American countries not bordered by Brazil are Ecuador and Chile. The Brazilian coastline covers 7,367 km to the east.

A tropical climate is predominant. In the south of the country, a subtropical climate prevails. Brazil is cut through by the Equator and Tropic of Capricorn. It is home to varied fauna and flora and extensive natural resources (Source Wikipedia).

This week’s international student of the week is Kaliana Moro Tanganelli. She is an exchange student in the department of Plant and Soil Sciences. Kaliana is from Brazil, she speaks Portuguese and English. She is from Americana, which is close to Sao Paulo.

She arrived in Stillwater this month and will leave in late October. She will graduate as a Forest Engineer from the Sao Paulo State University in Botucatu, Brazil this November. She just became a member of the Soil and Water Conservation Society of OSU.

In her free time Kaliana enjoys going out with her friends for dinner or lunch, dancing, and running. She enjoys going out with other exchange students with whom she has been having BBQs, travelling to OKC, and some other activities. Kaliana thinks that people in OSU have been friendly and have helped her a lot. She is glad to have this experience because she has learned about different cultures and met people from different countries. Kaliana has 3 sisters, 2 nephews, and several aunts and cousins, who she is missing very much right now!

She came to US for three months on an internship. Her research project is related to Bio-Solids. She chose OSU because faculty members from Sao Paulo State University and OSU have common research projects in animal waste management and soil conservation. Kaliana’s future plans are to graduate in November and apply for a Masters Degree program in the area of soil sciences in a country different from Brazil.

Advisor: Dr. Jeff Hattey

Kaliana's Advice: "Studying abroad is important to learn about soil practices in the temperate climates and also to experience different cultures."
