Destination: Thailand

 

The Kingdom of Thailand is a country in Southeast Asia, bordering Laos and Cambodia to the east, the Gulf of Thailand and Malaysia to the south, and the Andaman Sea and Myanmar to the west. The country's official name was Siam, until May 11, 1949. The word Thai means "freedom" in the Thai language and is also the name of the majority ethnic group. Thailand exports over $105 billion worth of products annually. Major exports include rice, textiles and footwear, fishery products, rubber, jewelry, automobiles, computers and electrical appliances. Thailand is the world’s no.1 exporter of rice, exporting 6.5 million tons of milled rice annually. Rice is the most important crop in the country. Thailand has the highest percent of arable land, 27.25%, of any nation in the Greater Mekong Subregion. About 55% of the arable land area is used for rice production.

From the Department of Plant and Soil Sciences...

In the photo above, Jana experiences the tropical climate of Thailand.

This week’s international student of the week is Jana Faye Morris. She is a Master of Science Degree student in Plant and Soil Science. Jana is from the San Luis Valley in southern Colorado. She is the currently the Vice-President of the Plant and Soils Graduate Student Organization.

Jana spends her free time playing bluegrass, she also enjoys playing the fiddle. Jana is the middle child of three girls. She is engaged to Greg Slaughter a design engineer at Charles Machine Works.

Jana moved to Oklahoma in 2003 to pursue her Bachelor’s of Science in Horticulture. Although OSU is far from her home is close enough so she can visit often. Jana future plans are to become a plant breeder.
