India

India (Hindi: Bhārat;), officially the Republic of India, is a sovereign country in South Asia. It is the seventh-largest country by geographical area, the second most populous country, and the most populous democracy in the world. Bounded by the Indian Ocean on the south, the Arabian Sea on the west, and the Bay of Bengal on the east, India has a coastline of over 7500 kilometres. It borders Pakistan to the west; China, Nepal, and Bhutan to the north-east; and Bangladesh and Myanmar to the east. In the Indian Ocean, India is in the vicinity of Sri Lanka, Maldives, and Indonesia.

Home to the Indus Valley civilization and a region of historic trade routes and vast empires, the Indian subcontinent was identified with its commercial and cultural wealth for much of its long history. Four major world religions, Hinduism, Buddhism, Jainism and Sikhism originated here, while Islam, Christianity, Judaism and Zoroastrianism arrived in the first millennium CE and shaped the region's variegated culture. Gradually annexed by the British East India Company from the early eighteenth century and colonised by the United Kingdom from the mid-nineteenth century, India became a modern nation-state in 1947 after a struggle for independence that was marked by widespread use of nonviolent resistance as a means of social protest.

India has a labour force of 509.3 million, 60% of which is employed in agriculture and related industries. Major agricultural crops include rice, wheat, oilseed, cotton, jute, tea, sugarcane, and potatoes. The agricultural sector accounts for 28% of GDP. Source Wikipedia

From the Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology....

This week’s international student of the week is Anuradha Penaganti. She is a second year PhD student in Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Department. Anu, her short name, is from Visakhapatnam Andhra Pradesh, a state in Southeastern part of India. She speaks Telugu, Hindi, and English.

Anu is a member of the Biochemistry and Molecular Biology Graduate Student Association in OSU. As a member of the association she has participated in research symposiums; in 2006 she won first prize for an oral presentation. She also has presented her research at the research symposium in OSU.

Anu spends most of her free time with her daughter who is 6 years old. They both enjoy playing indoor and outdoor games. Anu likes listening to music, watching movies, shopping, hanging out with friends at a lake or bowling or just chit chat at home. She also likes traveling and long drives.

Anu thinks that the USA has more opportunities to do research and that is the reason she came. When she decided to apply for her graduate studies, OSU offered her spring admission and furthermore, one of her friends was doing a PhD here. Anu’s future plans are to finish her PhD and then get a post-doctoral experience and return to her home country.

Anu is the second of three siblings; her elder brother is in Los Angeles, California working as a software engineer. Her younger brother is in India planning to come to the USA for his education. Anu’s mother lives in India with the youngest brother.

Anu advice to International Students: “We are at the right place where one can find diverse cultures and people from different backgrounds. Let us broaden our perspectives by learning from them while we work to pursue our individual goals.”
